History in the Dolomites

The Open-Air Museum of Lagazuoi

During the First World War, the Falzarego Pass was home to the front where the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies faced each other — a backdrop of immense Dolomite beauty that became the stage for one of the darkest chapters in human history. Today those same Dolomites preserve the memory of that time in the tunnels and trenches carved into the rock, now walkable on foot among pinnacles, towers and the remains of military barracks.

The Kaiserjäger Trail, exposed and partly equipped with fixed ropes, reaches the summit of Lagaciò with breathtaking views. The Anticima Gallery — one of the most daring tunnel systems built during the Great War, extending for over a kilometre — is an unforgettable experience. On the Valparola Pass, Forte Tre Sassi houses the Great War Museum, rich in objects, uniforms and testimonies of the wartime events in the Dolomites.
